The
Alphabet, Charts and Fonts Committee of the
International Phonetic Association runs a project to collect and post IPA charts whose metatext is in languages other than English. This project is inspired by the 2011 publication of a Chinese IPA chart, by the Phonetic Association of China, in the
Journal of the International Phonetic Association. For additional languages, translations of the metatext phonetic terms have been provided by a number of volunteer phoneticians, and charts made from their translations are posted below. These charts are currently drafts undergoing a review process. Revised charts (
in bold below) will be published in
JIPA and will be permantly posted on the IPA’s website.
Please send any comments about the drafts to the Alphabet, Charts and Fonts Committee, afc[at]internationalphoneticassociation.org. It may be some time before they are acted upon.
If you would like to participate in this project by providing translations in your native language, please note that proposals should consist of more than a literal rendering of the English chart and draw on existing practices and traditions for the language and its phonetic research community. Ideally, rather than being a single-author effort, the translation should involve a group of phoneticians who agree on the terms being used. This will strengthen the validity of the translation.
Please
click here to download the submission form for translations.
Please use only Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader (off-line, *not* a browser plug-in) to fill in this form, and return the translated file to Małgorzata Deroń, malgorzataderon[at]gmail.com. You may wish to contact the Committee before beginning your translation, to learn if someone else is already working on a chart in that language. The Committee will also give you details about additional information required for the reviewing process.
Please contact Małgorzata if the translation does not fit into the provided space or if you would like to further participate by helping us localise the
Interactive IPA Chart (non-linguistic metatext translation).
