The IPA Chart in four fonts
This page offers downloadable IPA charts and sub-charts in different fonts (Kiel, Doulos, DejaVu, and unitipa), resolutions (72ppi–1200ppi), and formats (PDF, PNG, JPEG). It also features the IPA Numbers Chart and the List of symbols and diacritics with descriptions & identifiers files, as well as enhanced PDF charts where additional description is displayed on-mouse-over any symbol (charts with tooltips).
Charts in other languages
Since 2018, the IPA has been working together with volunteer phoneticians to provide other language versions of its flagship Chart. Several drafts have been made available as PDF files and as an online interactive resource, and are undergoing the review process prior to their official release.
The Interactive IPA Chart
This project developed from the tooltip PDF charts and the List of symbols and diacritics with descriptions & identifiers files available above. Apart from symbol info (IPA description, name and number, Unicode name, range & hex value, etc.) already offered by these files, it is extended further with references to other phonetic notations and is accompanied by audio recordings and the transcription function. It is currently being developed to provide metatext in languages other than English.
Historical IPA charts
Historical IPA charts, 1900–1951
In 2018, Natalie Udomkesmalee gathered and analysed charts from the very first version of the International Phonetic Alphabet as published in “The Phonetic Teacher” in 1888 to the 1951 chart. Apart from descriptions of chart revisions, additions and deletions, her project offers scans of the original publications made available for download as PDFs.
Digitally remastered historical charts, 1888–2005
The previous project gave rise to the publication of fully digital versions of the original historical charts. Various computer fonts and the use of vector graphics resulted in modern recreations of the charts that combine the historical look of the originals with the advantages of the digital format in HD.
Interactive historical charts, 1888–[YYYY]
When completed, this project will present historical charts in an interactive format allowing users to access multiple funtionalities, such as:
- the evolution of individual symbol shapes, labels, and designations in the form of sliders
- overview tables grouping together publication details, chart structure, section designations, etc.
- symbol groupings according to their shape or designation
- detailed symbol info on-mouse-over
- pop-up view modelled on the interactive English chart symbol description element
- downloadable PDF versions (original and remastered)
